Ryan Lowe has come to the defence of Plymouth Argyle midfielder Panutche Camara over his red card near the end of the 1-1 draw with Crewe Alexandra at Home Park.

Camara was sent-off by referee Charles Breakspear for a second bookable offence in stoppage time at the end of the League One game.

Breakspear took action after Camara halted a Crewe attack with a challenge on Owen Dale.

It means the 23-year-old will be suspended for Argyle’s away game against Sunderland tomorrow night (7pm).

That is a blow for the Pilgrims because the strong-running midfielder has been in fine form recently.

Lowe thought Camara was unfortunate to be sent-off and suggested the actions of Crewe’s players had contributed to the decision.

The Argyle manager said: “He has just caught him a little bit the second one. I thought the rules were that you couldn’t get around the referee.

“They potentially got him sent-off, but I’m fine with Pan. He’s good. He has got a heart of gold and he cares.

“I haven’t got any qualms with him. I might have a qualm with the ref over the second yellow because it’s a little bit soft.

“Can he (Breakspear) just pull him and have a word with him? But all their players barged over to the referee and said ‘Get him off the pitch’. Maybe that has made his mind up.

“Pan has been fantastic. It might help him to have a little bit of a breather now.”

Camara has made a total of 17 starts and six substitute appearances for Argyle this season, and scored three goals, after signing from Crawley Town in the summer.

The midfielder, who originally comes from the west African country of Guinea-Bissau, has taken his move to Plymouth in his stride.

Lowe said: “Fair play to the kid, he’s listening. Schuey (Argyle assistant manager Steven Schumacher) is on with him quite a bit because it’s midfielder to midfielder.

“That’s the way we try and work. We give him that love he deserves. He’s a young lad and he’s living down here on his own.

“He’s doing English lessons and he wants to learn massively. He’s a great kid.

“Yeah, we are disappointed we are going to lose him (against Sunderland) but it just gives someone else an opportunity now to step in.”

The suspension of Camara could see Conor Grant revert to a central midfield role and new loan signing from Liverpool, Adam Lewis, start at left wing-back.

Camara will be available for the FA Cup fourth round tie away to Sheffield United on Saturday.

Was Camara unfortunate to be sent-off? And how should he be replaced against Sunderland? Please post your replies in the comments section below:
